Small Businesses + Sales: Kari’s POV

As a small business, we work hard to bring you great products at the lowest prices we possibly can — every single day. Unlike big box stores, we don’t mark items way up just to put them “on sale” later. What you see on the tag is already the deal.

When small businesses run frequent sales, it often teaches customers to wait… which means the shop ends up losing money on inventory, making it harder to bring in new finds and keep the doors open.

In all honesty, if a small business is running a sale, I’ll ask them to take the discount off when checking out. Sometimes they will, and sometimes they won’t. That’s at the discretion of that business.

Look, I’m all about getting a deal! Trust me. But I want the deals from the big box stores that are marking their products up 200%. Not from the small businesses that only have one location, a multitude of team members that they have to pay, has to continuously bring in new inventory and basically just want to keep their doors open. 

Let’s break it down just in relation to an item at Super Sweet Deals:

1️⃣ We buy the product.

We source items at the lowest margin possible so we can offer deep discounts to our community from day one.

2️⃣ We price it down immediately.

Instead of inflating prices and creating fake sales later, we discount items right away — often up to 50-75% off retail.

3️⃣ It goes out on the floor ready to be shopped.

This is already the best price we can offer while still being able to run the business.

4️⃣ Customers wait for a sale.

Because big stores train people to expect sales, some shoppers assume the price will drop again, even though it’s already as low as it can go.

5️⃣ We run a sale just to move inventory.

To make room for new items, we eventually discount it even more — sometimes below cost — which means we lose money on that product.

6️⃣ That loss affects future inventory.

When items don’t sell at their everyday low price, it makes it harder for us to keep bringing in the fresh, fun finds you love.

💗 I’ve actually been wanting to write something like this for a long time. But it never felt right. It never felt OK to tell people about the struggles of sales or how it affects profit margins. But before I started running a small business (remember when it was just wood signs out of my garage 🤯), I never realized how much a single purchase would affect a small business 👍. I never knew how much discounting an item would affect a small business 👎. It’s like I was almost naïve to it - my eyes are open now.
